n was born on January 9, 1913, to Francis A. Nixon and Hannah Milhous Nixon in a house his father had built in Yorba Linda, California.[5][6][7] His mother was a Quaker, and his upbringing was marked by conservative Quaker observances of the time, such as refraining from drinking, dancing, and swearing. His father converted from Methodism to Quakerism after his marriage.[7] Nixon had four brothers: Harold (1909–1933), Donald (1914–1987), Arthur (1918–1925), and Ed (born 1930).[8] Four of the five of the Nixon boys were named after early English kings; Richard was named after Richard the Lionheart.[9]
Nixon's early life was marked by hardship, and he would later quote a saying of Eisenhower to describe his boyhood, "We were poor, but the glory of it was, we didn't know it."[10] The Nixon family ranch failed in 1922, and the family then moved to East Whittier, California, in an area with many Quakers, where his father opened a grocery store and gas station.[11] Richard's younger brother Arthur died in 1925 after a short illness,[12] and his older brother Harold, whom Richard greatly admired, died of tuberculosis in 1933.[13] Historian David Reynolds summaris
